The movement of citizen collectives as a whole fundamentally contributes to transitions toward sustainability. From this perspective, what is the specific significance of community enterprises?
Community enterprises exist in many shapes and sizes, ranging from local energy cooperatives to village cafés and community centers. Researchers have summarized their significance for sustainability transitions in four points:
Creating new markets for sustainable products and services. Community enterprises play a vital role in establishing a new market for sustainable products and services, operating in the space between private businesses and the public sector. Examples include the first energy cooperatives and car-sharing initiatives in Germany. Their impact is not limited to economic outcomes; they also exert a social and moral influence, encouraging others to pursue the path of sustainability.
Treating resources as commons. Certain community enterprises withdraw their resources from traditional market mechanisms, instead treating them as commons—that is, resources collectively managed, democratically governed, and accessible to all. An example of this is Community Supported Agriculture initiatives.
Fostering broad acceptance and behavioral change. Community enterprises contribute to wider recognition of the need for sustainability transitions and the behavioral changes that accompany them. Large-scale projects often encounter resistance (e.g., wind farms), but this is less the case when enterprises are embedded in local communities that are actively involved in decision-making and can share in the benefits.
Leveraging local knowledge and context. The outcomes of sustainability transition processes are often highly dependent on local conditions. Community enterprises are locally rooted and effective at using local knowledge to establish rules for resource use and management in ways that suit the community. No one size fits all!
